Horizons at The Salisbury School is a truly unique non-profit that teaches students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to thrive in spite of challenging circumstances. Our holistic, hands-on approach to learning equips students with a strong motivation to learn and the skills necessary to realize their full potential.

We are one of only 16 truly unique public/private sites that are part of this national program. The program began almost 40 years ago in Connecticut at the New Canaan Country School and around 10 years ago they formed a national organization, Horizons National (www.horizonsnational.org) to replicate the model. The key components of the program are academic classes in reading, writing, math and science, swimming lessons, recreational and cultural enrichment opportunities. Horizons students come from all ethnic diversities. Horizons is a multi-year summer intervention and we strive to re-enroll students for 9 straight summers (rising 1st grade to rising 9th grade). We maintain a 1:4 teacher to student ratio, with a maximum capacity of 108 students.

In order to maintain the highest quality program and inidividual attention provided to each student, support from the local community is vital. Sponsorship of a child is a gift that lasts an entire lifetime and helps the community by investing in our youth. All children deserve the opportunity to achieve their highest potential, and, through your support, we can do that with many youth in our own area.

The program in Salisbury was founded in 2003 by O.U.R.Community led by Mr. Bill Middleton, The Salisbury School led by Mr. James Landi., and Camp Odyssey led by Dr. Harlan Eagle. We established a partnership with the Wicomico County Board of Education led by Dr. Charlene Cooper-Boston. This program is fully funded by donations, grants, fundraisers and in-kind services.
